The first and last night is spent in a shared room at the hotel at the fell center in Kiilopää. During the ski tour we will be staying in traditional wilderness cabins, maintained by the forest service. The cabins accommodate between 8 to 12 people (depending on the hut).
The cabins are primitive and consist of one small room only, which gives you a great sense of simplicity and a true wilderness experience. Basic wooden bunk beds with mattresses and pillows make the nights more comfortable. The huts are also equipped with a wood stove to keep us toasty and to dry clothes, a gas cooker to cook delicious meals and a table and benches to gather after a long day. There is no running water or electricity and no phone signal in the huts. We fetch water from a stream or lake, but access is never guaranteed, so melting snow could be necessary. Each cabin comes with a separate woodshed and dry toilet.
Treat yourself to a delicious Lappish meal. We will have an extensive dinner at the hotel’s restaurant before and after the skiing tour (dinner on arrival evening at own expense). Breakfast at the hotel is included. During the trip we’ll make breakfast, prepare lunch together and spoil you with delicious, fresh meals in the evening.
We can cater for all dietary requirements if needed with prior notice, however we kindly ask you only if it’s due to health reasons. The cooking facilities are rather small in the cabins limiting us to prepare a big variation of options.
A vegetarian diet is always possible. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have concerns or questions. We’ll make sure that the food won’t restrict you from participating.
During this expedition the terrain is quite variable with up and downhill sections. We will ski between 8 to 15km per day and be out around 5-6 hours or longer depending on the ever-changing snow conditions.
We’ll allow enough time for breaks and photo stops of course, but again all depending on the outside weather conditions. As an idea, on an average we ski around 2.6-3km/hrs when the snow is firmer. If we need to break trail, this could slow us down to only 1km/hr. But this is all part of the experience to stay prepared and flexible and adapt to nature.
We don’t require you to have previous skiing experience (any kind of skiing), but good physical fitness for skiing and pulling a 25kg sled for multiple days is required to maximise enjoyment on this active holiday. If in doubt about your abilities, please reach out to us.

Alternatively, you can fly into Rovaniemi and catch a bus to Kiilopää. The bus ride takes about 3,5 hours. Please check bus times before booking a flight. See below for more info about buses in Finland.
We will provide you with as much information as possible beforehand to make your journey to the North a stress-free process. However you are responsible for your travel arrangements to Ivalo and Kiilopää.
Yes, you can get to Kiilopää without flying. But keep in mind that this will make your travels a little longer. There is no train connection to Kiilopää. But you could take a train from Helsinki to the closest train station which is Rovaniemi (8½ - 12 hours). Trains are very comfortable in Finland. From Rovaniemi it is a 3 1⁄2 hours bus ride to Kiilopää.

Every day is different. Some days are shorter than others. But on average we ski about 8-15 km per day for around 5-7 hrs. Depending on the weather and the snow conditions the distances may vary from day to day.
Arrival Day: Welcome! We will all gather in Ruka at 4pm (exact location will be shared with the booking) and check in to our hotel for the night. We will use the evening to go over the trip details and equipment and enjoy a lovely dinner at a local restaurant (dinner at your own expense).
Day 1: On our first full day together we snowshoe or winter hike to a beautiful spot overlooking the stunning surroundings. It is a great way to tune into the Nordic routines and to get to know each other. It will only take up a few hours of the first half of the day, so there is still plenty of time left after to get prepared for our upcoming days at the cabin. Dinner at hotel.
Snowshoeing/ winter hiking 3-6km, 2-3hrs
Day 2: Today we head out into the snowy landscape on skis. In the morning, we will pick you up from the hotel in Ruka and drive to the starting point of our tour (approx. 40min). Here we have a short introduction to the skis we are using. The skis are more like gliding snowshoes and can be worn with your own winter boots. They are wider and shorter than typical alpine skis. You do not need previous skiing experience. It is very easy to pick up without much prior practice. It’ll be a long day of skiing (medium fitness required) and time spent outside, but the stunning scenery of Riisitunturi National Park and beyond, a warm lunch heated on the open fire and all the other impressions will make up for it so effortlessly. Look forward to a cosy woodfire-heated cabin as our base and waking up to spectacular surroundings by a frozen lake. It is truly a simple, but magical get-away. Dinner prepared together at the cabin. Night in the wilderness cabin.
Skiing 12.5km, 7-8hrs
Day 3: Let’s spend a relaxed day at the cabin. After breakfast you have the option to just be at the cabin and enjoy the peacefulness out in the wild or join a couple of hours exploring the surroundings on skis. We can practise fire making skills and prepare lunch on the open fire. The day wouldn’t feel complete without a refreshing Finnish sauna in the afternoon. Who will be brave enough to try ice-dipping in the lake? Clean yourself like in the old days with heated hot water and a bucket, as there are no showers or running water available. Our water comes from the lake.
Dinner is prepared together in the cabin. Wind down from another beautiful day, while you listen to the crackling of the wood stove and share stories with the others. But don’t forget to peek outside the cabin to see if the Northern Lights are dancing in the sky. The lake offers a great open place! Night in the wilderness cabin.
Optional skiing 2-5km, 2-3hrs
Day 4: Good morning or "hyvää huomenta" in Finnish from the cabin. After breakfast it is time for another exciting highlight: A full day guided husky tour at a small, local husky farm. An experience that can’t be left out while being in Lapland. You’ll be riding your own husky sled while someone else sits in the front and about halfway you will swap around. Plenty of opportunities for photos and videos. Lunch is served during the tour.
After an eventful day we will drive back to Ruka (approx. 1hr) and check-in to our guesthouse/hotel. A deserved hot shower and sauna are provided. A traditional Lappish dinner will complete our adventure. Let’s enjoy the evening and share our experiences.
Skiing 2.5km, 1hr
Day 5: Departure! After breakfast our journey officially ends.
If you would like to extend your stay we are happy to assist you!
Note:
Adjustments might be made to our itinerary depending on the weather and other unforeseen changing conditions. Our goal is to provide you with the best experience, so some adaptability is essential! Please make sure you familiarise yourself with our full T&C’s.
We’ll be exploring the surroundings of Ruka-Kuusamo. A small municipality and popular tourist destination in the Northeast of Finland at the bottom of Lapland (a cultural area of the North). Here the backyard of wild forest and soft rolling hills reaches far into the horizon leaving plenty of room for wandering and loosing yourself in its unique natural display. Time moves slower up here…
The pristine forests offer a place for many animals, like reindeer, moose, mountain hare, fox, brown bear, golden eagle and other wildlife. Daylight is still relatively short in January and at the beginning of February with the sun not rising high, coating the surroundings in beautiful pastel hues on clear days. In March and April, we can enjoy the warming sun again, long bright days and less freezing conditions. A beautiful time of winter as well.
We’ll spend the two nights in a cosy, remote wilderness cabin. The cabin is primitive and consists of one room only, which gives you a great sense of simplicity. Wooden bunk beds with mattresses, pillows and sleeping bags make the nights even more comfortable. The hut is also equipped with a wood stove to keep us toasty and to dry clothes, a gas cooker to cook delicious meals and a table and benches to gather after a long day. There is no running water or electricity. We’ll fetch water from the lake. A dry toilet is outside. And most importantly there is also a separate wood burning sauna and an ice hole for the brave ones. Ever heated your own sauna and water for washing? A simple, yet so rewarding and special experience. The cabin is private and only used by the group.
For the Pre- and Post-Night, we will stay in a cosy hotel in or near Ruka. Rooms are shared with two to four people (depending on availability). Breakfast is included. Note dinner is not included on the pre-night!
Breakfast is included at the hotel/guesthouse stay. During our stay at the wilderness cabin we will prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner together. We are focusing on regional ingredients and will make some traditional Finnish meals, so you also get to taste the Finnish culture. The food is mainly vegetarian based. For our second evening of the tour we will eat out in a local restaurant (included in the price, excl. drinks).
Lunch will be cooked mostly over an open fire while we are out exploring. On our last evening, we will treat ourselves to an extensive and delicious Lappish dinner
Dinner on the arrival evening is not included!
We can cater for all dietary requirements if needed with prior notice. Don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have concerns or questions. We’ll make sure that the food won’t restrict you from participating.
You don’t need previous skiing experience, however a good level of fitness and willingness to try something new is required to maximise enjoyment on this active tour. Skiing is classified as a sport and together with the exposure to cold, dry air and unpredictable weather conditions the energy consumption is higher than normally. We ski around 12.5km on the first day, on a mix of established winter trails and off-track. As an idea skiing for 4km equals roughly an 8km walk. So, if you can walk for up to 24km or hike for about 5-6hrs your good to join this trip.
If in doubt about your abilities, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
It is mandatory to have personal travel insurance to participate on our tours.
We highly recommend you buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your spot to cover yourself should you fall ill or injure yourself before your trip.
With this tour we want to give you the chance to extend your stay on your own terms.
Explore the capital Helsinki for a couple of extra nights or stay a few more nights in the beautiful North. Either way, we are more than happy to help you with places to stay and what else you can do in the area. Just get in touch with us.

If the sky is clear there is always a chance to see the Northern Lights. We just need to be patient and not to forget to peek our head up to the sky at night. But also a sky full of stars is impressive up North. 😊It is recommended to bring a tripod if you wish to have best results photographing the Northern Lights.
On our Backcountry Skiing & Husky Adventure, we will prepare fresh meals in the wilderness cabin. Most of our meals are vegetarian, but we do add some local meat or fish sometimes (depending on availability). If you have questions about dietary requirements, get in contact with us and we can go through your wishes. Lunch will be eaten outside mainly on the open fire.

We’ll connect you up with those on the trip, so you’ll have someone to travel with. Group meeting and introduction to the week’s programme. Dinner and accommodation at basecamp.
Day 2: Today we head out into the snowy landscape on skis. After a wholesome breakfast we drive to our starting point and have an introduction to the skis we are using, which act differently to downhill skis. During the evening, we will go over our next adventure, a mini ski expedition to a wilderness cabin where we’ll be spending the next two nights.
Skiing 6.5km, 5-6hours
Day 3: This day will start with breakfast and last arrangements for our exciting skiing adventure and a 45min drive to our starting point. It will be a long day of skiing (same skis we have used the day before) and time spent outside, but the stunning scenery of Riisitunturi National Park, a warm lunch heated on the open fire and all the other impressions will make up for it so effortlessly. A 30min car ride back will take us back to the cabin. For our last evening, we will visit a local farm restaurant on the Finnish countryside. Here we will first enjoy a traditional private sauna in an over 100-year-old cabin and a hot tub bath under the stars (or with a bit of luck the dancing Northern lights :).
